What’s been happening in our Social Work and Wellbeing Program
Our Social Work and Wellbeing Program has had many activities in the last couple months to wrap up the year, bringing together war widows, defence and veteran families to foster connection, creativity and calm. From restorative yoga to festive photoshoots, each event has been a chance to unwind, reflect and strengthen defence and veteran families community ties. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to.
Yoga session
Defence and veteran families came together for a restorative yoga session at Canberra Yoga Space. The gentle practice focused on enhancing flexibility, releasing tension and promoting healing. The session concluded with a relaxing meditation and sound healing, leaving everyone feeling rejuvenated. The morning ended with cups of tea and light refreshments, fostering a sense of community and shared calm.
Mask making
Families came together at our Chatswood office to decorate face masks and explore the dual roles of defence and veteran families who often live and work in the civilian community. Uncovering the different masks that families wear, both inside and outside of the defence context, is important in understanding how identity impacts on wellbeing.
Collage workshop
Defence and veteran families took part in a collage workshop at Strathnairn Arts Association. Surrounded by nature, participants engaged in creating individual art pieces, with the workshop designed to promote self-expression, wellbeing and self-reflection. It was a lovely opportunity for participants to unwind, reflect and enjoy the calming process of art making while connecting with others. “Thank you for running this workshop. It was a lovely chance to zone out and create art in a relaxing and safe environment.” – Veteran family member.
Online art expression
Veteran families came together online via Zoom to paint flowers of gratitude. Through this activity, families had the chance to ponder the meaning and purpose of gratitude, sharing how gratitude can impact on wellbeing. Those in attendance shared what they were grateful for that evening while painting on their very own canvas. Some enjoyed silence while others enjoyed connecting with attendees or their own family beside them.
Christmas family photoshoots
In November, we held our inaugural Christmas family photoshoots at Dee Why beach in Sydney and Weston Park in Canberra. The photoshoots featured festive Christmas decorations and the peaceful park settings created a beautiful backdrop for families. Many dressed up for the occasion and brought children and dogs, making the mini photoshoots a fun and memorable experience.
