Australian War Widows Queensland has run a successful pen pal program, connecting widows throughout the state. The ladies who have received a letter from their pen pal say it “made their day so much better”. You could be part of this valued program too and make your own pen pal!
AWWQ has one member who is nearly ninety years old who has written to a widow in her fifties for over a year. The two widows have developed a lovely bond. Often older widows have so much experience that younger widows can find so comforting.
The Pen Pal Program aims to connect war widows from across Australia via letters or emails. The goal is to enhance social connections, support those who may be feeling isolated, and form ongoing friendships.
To join this program, interested widows can register and list their preferences such as:
- Letter or email
- Interests and hobbies
- Location of pen pal
Age preference
When successful matches are found, both widows will be contacted by phone. No names, email or postal addresses are exchanged without consent. A decision as to who will write first is made and correspondence commences.
We understand that keeping socially connected is more important than ever. Here at AWWNSW, we would like to continue this initiative to connect more widows.

For members who can be out and about, our Guild and Social Clubs offer a place to meet other war widows and members who have been through similar experiences. Many of our clubs have social events such as bus trips and luncheons. Contact the AWWNSW office on 02 9267 6577 for information on clubs, venues and times.
