Defence families and veteran families wellbeing activity

Our recent wellbeing activities for war widows and veteran families

Our Wellbeing Program has been thriving with a variety of engaging activities that foster social connection for war widows, defence and veteran families. From mindful journaling workshops to hands on baking, these events have provided ways to connect and unwind with others! Take a look at our most recent activities.

Journaling workshop

On 21 February, war widows, defence and veteran families came together over Zoom for an evening of journaling. They explored the benefits of journaling as a tool to engage in gratitude and self-care, learning that journaling enables people to externalise thoughts and feelings.

This activity provided a safe space for families to connect with like-minded peers expanding social networks and normalising the unique challenges veteran families face in day-to-day life. Participants were encouraged to think creatively when responding to the prompts provided in the journal.

Kokedama workshop

On 22 February, war widows, defence and veteran families gathered at the Families of Veterans Guild Chatswood office for a morning of kokedama making, paired with a shared morning tea. Using natural materials like soil and moss, attendees were able to create their own kokedama plant.

Veterans, war widows, partners, families and friends enjoyed the hands on experience of messy play through craft and all participants took home their own kokedama.

Sound healing session

2 March held a relaxing sound healing session. War widows, defence and veteran families experienced the calming effects of crystal bowls, drumming, a rain maker and mantra singing, combined with guided breathwork and meditation techniques.

The session provided an opportunity for participants to relax and gain mindfulness. Afterward, attendees connected over coffee overlooking Cronulla beach.

Baking workshop

On 6 March, war widows, partners and children gathered at Kissing Point Cottage for a morning of baking. Engaging the senses through measuring, chopping, cutting, mixing, stirring, melting, pouring, and decorating, all attendees were able to create chocolate muffins.

Attendees made their own batch of muffins and during the process, faces were covered in chocolate and many stories were shared between war widows, current serving members, spouses, and children followed by sitting together and eating their freshly baked muffins along with a nice warm cuppa.

These activities are just some of the variety of activities available through our Wellbeing Program.
