War widows in the City of Ryde and surrounding areas are invited to join the North Ryde War Widows Social Club. A dedicated club designed to connect war widows to peer support, encourage a sense of community, and bring together those with similar lived experiences.
In the Ryde and Canada Bay local government areas alone, there are over 150 war widows who are currently supported by DVA. This program we offer, exists to support these women.
A special celebration
Recently, the North Ryde War Widows Social Club celebrated the 100th birthdays of two of their members: Kath Reay and Kennie Dare. Attendees enjoyed the beautiful bushland views at The North Ryde RSL club and shared a meal connecting with friends to celebrate these milestone birthdays.
Our Board Director Lynne Sullivan and member Nola Hill, standing in for club coordinator Elsie Cuthbert, welcomed the North Ryde war widows and guests, including North Ryde RSL Sub-Branch President Lieutenant Commander Peter Colthorpe, Royal Australian Navy Retired.
Peter recited the War Widows Ode and shared some of his naval experiences spanning his three decade career. His stories were beautifully linked to the social club members, as he shared tales of his naval spouse of 24 years and recited the famous poem “The Sailor’s Wife.”
The 100 years young birthday ladies were toasted, enjoying their two birthday cakes amongst friends.
As a special surprise, Kath, Kennie and three other World War II war widows were presented with a special 75th anniversary medallion marking the end of World War II, a gift from DVA. The ladies were incredibly touched by the honour that moved all in attendance.
The North Ryde War Widows Social Club meets on the fourth Monday of every month and often organise special outings to explore Sydney’s history and culture. New members from the North Ryde and surrounding areas are warmly welcomed.
