Exercise as self-care for veteran families

The role of physical activity in strengthening family bonds

Regular physical activity can be a form of self-care. Exercise not only benefits physical health but also improves mental wellbeing, reduces stress, and strengthens family bonds. Engaging in family exercise creates an opportunity for everyone to reconnect, release tension, and stay active together.

Veteran families face unique challenges. Regular exercise can serve as an outlet for coping with these stressors. Whether it’s a morning walk, a weekend hike, or even a family game of basketball, these shared moments offer a healthy break from routine, promoting both physical and emotional wellbeing and resilience.

Prioritising family exercise for lasting wellbeing

Exercise helps regulate mood, as it stimulates the production of endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” hormone. This can be especially important for veterans and their families dealing with anxiety, depression, or post-service adjustments. Incorporating fun, family-centered activities encourage everyone to participate, creating a sense of unity and support.

Consistent exercise can improve emotional wellbeing and promotes good sleep, helping families navigate stress and strengthen their support systems, especially during times of transition like deployment. A report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) highlights that veterans and their families who engage in regular physical activity report better mental health outcomes, feeling more connected to their family and communities.

By prioritising family exercise as a self-care practice, veteran families can find joy in movement, create new memories or routines and strengthen their bonds. It’s a simple yet powerful way to focus on wellbeing for the whole family.
