Our recent veteran family dinner wellbeing activities: strengthening connections

We are always exploring meaningful ways to support connection and wellbeing amongst war widows, defence and veteran families. One of our newest and most warmly received wellbeing activities has been the Veteran Family Dinners—hosted both in-person and online—where cooking and connecting go hand in hand.

This setting of cooking together and then gathering over a shared meal is a reflection to one of our wellbeing tips shared in May, telling us the unseen benefits of connecting over a shared meal. Studies show that it often brings people together, offers a sense of purpose, reduces stress, and gives us a chance to slow down, be present, and engage in intentional self-care through the simple act of cooking and eating together.

Cook & connect: veteran family dinner online

Defence and veteran families lived this wellbeing tip on 28 May when joining us virtually for our Cook & Connect: Veteran Family Dinner Online. Guided by facilitators from our Social Work and Wellbeing team, participants prepared chipotle tacos from their own kitchens. Simple ingredients, clear steps—and most importantly, space to connect.

One participant shared, “I would have eaten toast instead if I didn’t sign up.” Another commented, “Thank you for making this so easy, inviting and warm for us.”

The experience wasn’t just about food—it was about creating time to pause, engage and reflect upon how mundane tasks and routines such as cooking dinner, which we all do every day, can be an opportunity for connection alongside others. As one attendee put it:
“From invite to planning, to execution, to communication, it was a calming experience and really enjoyable.”

Veteran partner dinner Canberra

Similarly in June, we came together again—this time in person—for a Veteran Partner Dinner at The Dock in Kingston. War widows and partners of current and former serving members gathered for an evening of connection over dinner. Whether it be online or in person, the benefits of connection over a shared meal is still present.

These dinners really reflect a broader theme we highlighted in our May wellbeing tip: Connecting over a shared meal supports emotional wellbeing.

Due to impacts and requirements of defence service, war widows and families of veterans are often living far away from family and community networks leading to disconnection and social isolation. One way we can support you to feel connected is through wellbeing activities like these.

We are excited to continue activities just like this, with an in-person family lunch and another online dinner coming up in July. Missed out on registrations? Do not worry, stay tuned for upcoming activities both different and similar to this, all designed to support and connect war widows, defence and veteran families.

Subscribe to our Wellbeing Newsletter so you don’t miss a thing!

The post Benefits of connecting over a shared meal first appeared on Families of Veterans Guild.
