A successful Wellness Walk in Canberra from our Wellbeing Program

The Social Work and Wellbeing team’s first Wellness Walk event on 13 September in Canberra was a resounding success, bringing together families of veterans for a rejuvenating and engaging experience. The day began at 9.30am at Wildbark at Mulligans Flat in Throsby, ACT, where participants gathered before setting out on the Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary Wetlands Walk. This 60 minute, comfortable stroll along the boardwalk and through the wetlands provided a perfect blend of nature and relaxation.

Mulligans Flat is a recent addition to Canberra’s conservation efforts, dedicated to reversing biodiversity loss through restoration, education, and inspiration. The area offers a glimpse into Australia’s pre-settlement woodlands, showcasing a landscape that existed before the introduction of invasive species and large-scale clearing. This walk was not only a chance to connect with nature but also an opportunity to appreciate the ongoing efforts to preserve and restore these vital ecosystems.

For many attendees, it was their first visit to this trail and they were captivated by the vibrant sights and sounds of the wetlands. The tranquil environment was alive with the calls of magpies and the graceful presence of ibis, making the experience more enchanting. Beyond the natural beauty, the walk provided a valuable space for meaningful conversations and the forging of new friendships.

After the walk, the group gathered at the Wildbark Cafe, where they enjoyed a well-deserved coffee courtesy of the Families of Veterans Guild. This post-walk coffee break offered the perfect setting to unwind, allowing participants to reflect on the beautiful journey they had just experienced. It was a wonderful chance to deepen conversations and strengthen the bonds formed during the walk.

We eagerly anticipate welcoming you to our next wellbeing event, where we’ll continue to offer a supportive space for self-care and meaningful connections among Defence and Veteran families. These gatherings are designed to provide a break from routine and nurture the relationships and support networks vital to our shared experiences.
