Have you heard of Biophilia? The term combines “Bio,” meaning life, and “Philia,” meaning a friendly feeling toward. Biophilia enthusiasts suggest that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature. Edward O. Wilson defines biophilia as “the urge to affiliate with other forms of life.” Research suggests that biophilia can have a positive impact on wellbeing and should be included in daily self-care practices. Spending time in nature can positively impact both physical and mental health. Time spent in green spaces, for instance, is associated with lower levels of stress, improved memory, and heightened creativity.

Incorporating biophilia into your self-care routine

Here are some ways defence & veteran families, including defence spouses and war widows, can incorporate biophilia into their self-care routines:

Spending Time Outdoors: Make it a habit to spend time in natural settings regularly. This could involve going for walks in parks, hiking trails, or simply sitting in a garden or green space. This practice can be particularly beneficial for defence families who may face unique challenges.

Bringing Nature Indoors: Incorporate elements of nature into your living and working spaces. This could include adding indoor plants, natural materials like wood or stone, or even nature-inspired artwork. Creating a nature-infused environment can provide a calming effect for defence spouses and war widows managing multiple responsibilities.

Nature-Based Activities: Engage in activities that allow you to interact with nature directly, such as gardening, birdwatching, or stargazing. These activities can be both relaxing and rejuvenating, offering a therapeutic escape for veteran families.

Mindful Nature Observation: Practice mindfulness while in nature by paying close attention to your surroundings using your senses. Notice the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of the natural environment around you. Try this at the beach while watching each wave roll in. This mindful practice can help defence families stay grounded and present.

Nature Sounds and Scents: Bring the calming effects of nature indoors by playing recordings of nature sounds or using essential oils with natural scents like lavender or eucalyptus during relaxation exercises. This can help create a serene atmosphere for defence families.

Digital Detox in Nature: Take breaks from screens and technology by unplugging and spending time in nature. Use this time to recharge and reset away from the distractions of modern life. This practice can be especially beneficial for defence spouses and war widows seeking a break from daily stressors.

Benefits of biophilia for defence families

By incorporating these biophilic practices into your self-care routine, defence families can experience the restorative power of nature to nurture their physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. Embracing biophilia can lead to lower stress levels, improved memory, heightened creativity, and a deeper connection to the natural world.

Engaging in mindful art creation can be a rewarding way for veterans and defence families, including defence spouses, to practice being present in the moment. By focusing on the process rather than the outcome, you can bring peace and creativity into your life. Here are some practical tips to help you integrate mindfulness into your artistic process at home.

We also invite you to join our community on Our Space | Facebook to connect with like-minded individuals, including other defence families, who are also exploring ways to look after their wellbeing.

Setting Your Space

Find a quiet, comfortable area where you can focus without distractions. Ensure your workspace is organised, with all your materials easily accessible. This will help you create a conducive environment for mindfulness, especially important for defence families who may face unique challenges.

Begin with Intention

Before you start, take a moment to set an intention for your session. This could be as simple as “I will stay present” or “I will enjoy the process.” Setting an intention helps ground you and provides a focus for your mindfulness practice, which can be particularly beneficial for defence spouses managing multiple responsibilities.

Focus on Your Senses

As you create, pay attention to the sensory details. Notice the texture of the paper, the sound of the pencil, or the feel of the paintbrush in your hand. These sensations help anchor you in the present moment and enhance your mindfulness, offering a therapeutic escape for veterans’ families.

Breathe and Relax

Take deep breaths and relax your body. If you feel tension or frustration, pause, breathe, and gently return to your work. Breathing deeply can help you stay calm and focused, a useful technique for defence families dealing with stress.

Embrace Imperfection

Let go of the need for perfection. Focus on the process rather than the outcome. Allow yourself to explore and make mistakes. Embracing imperfection can lead to more creative and fulfilling experiences, a valuable lesson for defence spouses and veterans’ families.

Reflect on Your Experience

After finishing, take a few minutes to reflect on your experience. How did it feel to create mindfully? What did you notice about your thoughts and emotions? Reflecting on your experience can deepen your mindfulness practice and provide insights into your creative process, fostering a sense of accomplishment for defence families.

By incorporating these tips, defence families can transform their art-making at home into a mindful practice. This not only enhances creativity but also brings peace and presence into their lives. Remember, mindfulness is a journey, and every moment spent being present is a step towards greater wellbeing.

Inspire others by sharing your experience of this mindfulness activity on Our Space | Facebook.

“You need to put your oxygen mask on first, before you can help others.” This saying holds true, especially for the families of veterans who often find themselves feeling disconnected from their own needs, their families, and their communities. Taking on caregiving roles more intensely than their civilian peers can lead to stress and dysregulation, impacting overall wellbeing. So, how can we regulate our nervous systems and prioritise our wellbeing? The answer lies in self-care and community support.

The Importance of Self-Care

Self-care is crucial for our social, emotional, physical, and environmental wellbeing. It involves engaging in simple and deliberate practices or activities that bring joy and reduce stress. By mindfully filling up our ‘wellbeing cup’ with regular self-care practices, we can help to regulate and calm our minds.

Practical Self-Care Tips

Self-care looks different for everyone, but it requires mindfulness and deliberation. Here are some practical self-care tips that you can incorporate into your daily routine:

Two Minutes: Stretching, deep breathing, complimenting yourself, or laughing.

Five Minutes: Listening to a song, singing out loud, stepping outside for fresh air.

Ten Minutes: Calling a friend, writing in a journal, meditating, decluttering your workspace, or having a cup of tea.

Or Longer: Getting a massage, going for a walk, reading a book, or practicing yoga.

Benefits of Regular Self-Care

Research shows that practicing regular self-care promotes general wellbeing, deepens connections, lowers the risk of disease, and helps regulate the nervous system. Self-care is not a selfish act; it is essential to take the time to check in with ourselves and ensure that our ‘wellbeing cup’ is full. After all, we cannot pour from an empty cup.

Joining a Community of Peers

One of the most effective ways to enhance your self-care routine is by joining a community of peers. Connecting with others who share similar experiences can provide emotional support, reduce feelings of isolation, and offer practical advice. Being part of a community can also motivate you to maintain your self-care practices and hold you accountable.

Making time for self-care is vital for maintaining overall wellbeing. By incorporating simple self-care practices into your daily routine and joining a community of peers, you can improve your mental, emotional, and physical health. Remember, self-care is not a luxury; it is a necessity.

Defence and Veterans Families Community Art Day

We hosted two inspirational days at our Chatswood head office, where families of current and former serving ADF members came together to connect through art. It was wonderful to see different generations get together and create meaningful art together.

In our focus on creating an inclusive space for all families connected to defence, this event was a testament to how inclusive our community truly is. Different generations of war widows, children of veterans , partners of veterans, grand-children of veterans connected through a common project and it was wonderful to host such days that are highlighting, once again, the real need for our community to find support from their peers. No one understands better than the person who has, or who is, walking the same path.

We will be hosting more events like this as they are crucial for families to get together, subscribe to our wellbeing newsletter here to be the first to find out or register your interest by email wellbeing@fov.org.au.

Defence & veterans families embraced the magic of art and creativity

In a world that’s constantly moving, taking a moment to create art can be a powerful way to reconnect with ourselves and those we love. Whether it’s painting, drawing, crafting, or any other form of artistic expression, the act of creating together can bring immense joy and strengthen bonds.

🌟 Why Art Matters:
▪ Self-Expression: Art allows us to express our thoughts, feelings, and ideas in unique ways.
▪ Stress Relief: Engaging in creative activities can be incredibly therapeutic and relaxing.
▪ Boosts Creativity: It encourages us to think outside the box and explore new perspectives.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Bonding with Loved Ones:
▪ Quality Time: Creating art together is a wonderful way to spend quality time with friends and family.
▪ Shared Memories: The process of making art together creates lasting memories and stories to cherish.
▪ Encourages Teamwork: Collaborating on a project fosters teamwork and communication.

Join us at our next Families of Veterans Community Art Day! Gather your loved ones, pick up those brushes, and let your creativity flow. Let’s celebrate the beauty of art and the joy it brings to our lives.
